Cynthia Beth Rubin developed the original design for Avignon Afterimage in 1987, while living in Avignon, France. The imagery reflects the mountainous landscape of Provence, mixed with the arches which are pervasive in the traditional architecture of the region. Rubin, a resident of New Haven, Connecticut, chose Avignon because of the Sister City relationship with New Haven. Using a Macintosh computer, she designed each color as a separate stencil.

In actual size, the pattern of the computer pixels is clearly visible, as was commmon in computer works in 1987.
Avignon Afterimage was installed in Morrill Hall, on the Southern Connecticut State University campus, in 1989.
